Smooth Operations is an award-winning independent radio and TV production company specialising in music documentaries, live broadcasts and series. The company is run by John Leonard and Nick Barraclough, who joined forces in 1996 after long and varied careers with the BBC.

Now in its 12th year it produces a varied portfolio of productions for BBC radio and television. Over that time Smooth Operations has produced more than 2000 hours of programming for the BBC, with many household names as presenters.

Programmes made by Smooth Operations for BBC Radio 2 won a Sony Gold Award in 2008 – for The Feelgood Factor, Mark Radcliffe’s radio journey to meet the three survivors of the classic r’n’b band Dr Feelgood (see Commissioned Programming News and the Smooth Operations website for more info).

Current programmes airing on BBC Radio include the Mark Radcliffe & Stuart Maconie Show (R2 Monday-Thursday 2000-2200); the Mike Harding Folk & Acoustic Show (R2 Wednesdays 1900-2000) and the Bruce Dickinson Rock Show (6Music Saturdays 2100–0000). Country presenter Nick Barraclough recently switched after many years on Radio 2 to take up a new Sunday afternoon slot on Smooth Radio (1400–1700).

Smooth Operations also created the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, now in its eighth year, and founded the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in 1998. It broadcasts live each year from the CMA Awards in the USA and the BBC Radio 2 Cambridge Folk Festival in Britain, and specialises in the management and coverage of major events as diverse as the Live Earth Festival, Blackpool Illuminations, New Orleans Mardi Gras and Rio Carnival.
